All,
I've upgraded from woody to sarge to etch to lenny, and I am having problems
with sound. (I had no problems in woody, but I did not test sound in sarge
or etch since it was one upgrade right after the other). Here are my specs:
Debian 5.0 (lenny) on Dell Inspiron 8100. Sound card is obviously an ESS
Maestro3
kernel is a custom build (2.6.26)

I followed the directions from http://wiki.debian.org/snd-maestro3, namely:

mkdir /lib/firmware/ess
cp *fw /lib/firmware/ess
//I have verified that /lib/firmware/ess contains: maestro3_assp_kernel.fw
and maestro3_assp_minisrc.fw
modprobe -r snd_maestro3
modprobe snd_maestro3 //this takes ~ 1 minute to execute
after the above command, dmesg shows:
