I have found that the "bf24" kernel will install, but upon reboot there is a PCI/IRQ conflict which renders the system non-bootable.
I do not seem to have this problem with the idepci kernel that is normally provided. However there are a number of char-major-... related errors. Non critical, but persistent. (char-major-10-135)
The conflict happens during the boot sequence between PCI devices 00:03:.0 (thernet controller eepro100) and 00:03.1 (Xircom Serial controller -- unkonwn device 000c) and IRQ 11
I am currently doing a work around on this by installing the absolute minimum (skip tasksel, skip dselect) and installing kernel-image-2.4.18-686 which does not have this PCI conflict issue.
And one last note: I found bttv drivers loaded into my /etc/modules.conf by default. Wasn't expecting that since they aren't "default". I have no clue what I actually have in regard to video devices for TV... But just seemed odd.
