I recently did a fresh install of Lenny from the DVDs, and everything _was_ working fine. Using Gnome, Until yesterday, I was able to access the System -> Administration Menu items to set up users and so forth.

However, yesterday and today I can no longer do this. When I click on one of the Administration items, I get a dialog saying "the configuration could not be loaded." This occurs the matter which user name I use to login.

I know these applications need to be run by root, and if I login to a console a regular user, I can su with the root password without problem. I can also open a root terminal within Gnome. But if I execute one of the utilities (e.g., /usr/bin/users-admin) from the root terminal, the same error-message dialog pops up in Gnome.

I am completely stymied. The only thing that's happened in the past couple of days was an upgrade of six packages that Lenny notified me about. The packages were:

inux-image-2.6.26-1-686 ...
ghostscript ...
libgs8 ...
gs-common ...
libglib2.0-0 ...
liblcms1 ...

I doubt if the ghostscript stuff and liblcms1 cause of this problem, which leaves only the kernel and libglib2.0-0.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem so I can administer Linux within Gnome?

Thanks in advance for any help.
