Well, this morning's kernel upgrade is what triggered it, but I think
the real cause was something updated earlier, and this was the first
reboot. There are 2 servers, one got the kernel update and the other
didn't. But they both hit the same problem on reboot.

A lot of the talk I found on google was from last fall. The workaround
was posted last night.

It's (almost) for sure something to do with grub 2. It happens after the
MBR is processed and the 'menu' is read from /boot/grub, but before
anything in the root filesystem is read. And the workaround involves
editing the menu data in grub's memory and entering a couple commands in
grub's shell.

I haven't been able to duplicate it yet on a machine on the bench...
