You may need to change your display manager configuration to give a
"shutdown" option.  You don't say which one you're using; in the
particular case of gdm, you need to set SystemMenu=true in
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf.  Alternatively, you can get a text console by
pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, and from there return to X with Ctrl+Alt+F7.
>From the text console, Ctrl+Alt+Del should cleanly restart the
system (see /etc/inittab for details).
