The GUI tool is /usr/sbin/gdmsetup from the gdm package.  Security tab, 
Automatic Login checkbox and username textfield.

The configuration file is /etc/gdm/gdm.conf with Debian defaults and 
documentation in /usr/share/gdm/defaults.conf from the gdm package.
