By the time Debian gets Postfix installed, it's in a reasonably
functional state -- not optimized, but functional. For POP and IMAP, the
simplest route I've found is Dovecot (also available as a Debian
package). That's also pretty functional out of the box.

I've never needed to access much documentation on Dovecot, but Postfix
has a very good web site. The little I've needed, Dovecot looked pretty
well done, too. Try:

I remember when I was a total Inet newbie, Webmin saved my life by
making really basic configuration much easier and more understandable:
