aptitude is the preferred package manager since sarge.

Preferred by whom, for what reason? I've always been much happier
with apt-get when I want precision, aptitude when I want to browse.
When I upgraded from etch to lenny, apt-get gave me useful feedback
that helped me fix things; aptitude wanted to mark my entire system
for purge, for no specified reason...

I just moved from sarge to lenny like this:
- changed my /etc/apt/sources.list to lenny
- did an apt-get update
- after that a apt-get dist-upgrade.
All goes well, no 1 problem.

Remarks: if you have kdm installed, on the dist-upgrade of kdm, kdm is launched and you'd log out of them to continue the dist-upgrade !
