Unless there is any pressing need for you to use SSH, I would recommend you temporary set up FTP for him instead. It is much faster for file transfer than SFTP/SCP. FTP can also resume broken transfers. Also I see no need for him to create an archive of data on 10 MB each. If you prefer the archive method, I would suggest you make him zip the files up in say 3 big files, 1 Gb each, and let him transfer those using FTP.
