Google for "root password forgotten", it's possible to boot from a CD
and to reset/change the password.

Are you sure you specify root as user when logging in? Try using a
very simple password for testing purposes, like 123. Check caps lock
and num lock and any other modes your keyboard might have that could
make you type something else than you think you do.

Does the password for the normal user created during the installation
work?
