In the ~/log/logfile file, i found the error message says cannot find
postgres command, so i change it to this:
su -c "/usr/lib/postgresql/8.3/bin/postgres -D ~/data > ~/log/logfile
2>&1 &" postgres
and it works now!
But this is a Band-Aid on a hosed postgresql install.
