Which driver do you need, ath5k or ath9k? In the first case you only
need 2.6.26 which is available in etch. You just need to install it
explicitly, 2.6.18 is still the default kernel for etch.

If you want to compile your own kernel anyway (it doesn't hurt to know
how to do it), install kernel-package. This way you'll end up with a
handy linux-image-*.deb which you can install and remove easily.
