I am having the same problem, Fresly installed debian lenny amd64 - chose "Standard system - Laptop" Dist-upgraded to unstable, apt-get installed gnome xorg, rebooted no other action was made.
tried also fc-cache --force, defoma-reconfigure, but only X apps which do not depend on libXft are displaying fonts (xterm) .... No errors, no weird messages on logs.
