So I'm trying to get a Windows XP Pro guest set up for Virtualbox under
Testing.

I create a new session, and boot it from the install DVD, and it boots to a
prompt saying to press Enter. But it ignores keystrokes.

I dd an image of the disk, same thing happens.

I make a copy of a working guest (running XP Home), mount the DVD, and boot
the working image. Ignores the keyboard and won't install.

I start XP Home in the working image, manually start Setup.exe from the
mounted DVD, and installation starts and works fine.

What? Why won't the session recognize the keyboard when booted from a DVD
or DVD image?
