Upon a brief investigation, I remembered that I had seen this behaviour before when attempting to use EXA as an acceleration method for the intel driver. XAA is or used to be the default, but after going into xorg.conf and enabling XAA explicitly, the behaviour went away. Maybe xserver-xorg-video-intel is the place to look for bugs? - Jordi G.
