Try this: sed 's/[[:space:]]*;.*//' file | less -s The 'less -s' squeezes consecutive blank lines. See also 'more -s' and 'cat --squeeze-blank' (but beware that 'cat -s' on SysV systems means to be silent about missing files). Bob
