By way of style, 'configure' and 'make' can and should generally be
run as a mortal user:

  alsa-utile-0.9.6$ ./configure
  alsa-utils-0.9.6$ make
  alsa-utils-0.9.6$ sudo make install

You also may find it better or more convenient to try using the Debian
packaging system; you can get the source for the Debian alsa-utils
package and try updating it to version 0.9.6 yourself.
