I guess it all depends on how much negativity you imbue into the word "shouldn't". IOW, you certainly *can* do it, but it's definitely sub-optimal, since it's a deeply GNOME-only app. "Things" would run smoother if you ran a slightly-Gtk app like Icedove, and totally smoothly if you ran the KDE MUA KMail.
