I'm not sure if there is progress, but some more info

I removed the relevant interfaces from /etc/network/interfaces as per
instructions I saw on an ubuntu forum.
Network-manager does bring up the relevant interfaces, but it doesn't see any
wireless aps although iwlist wlan0 scan shows them. It also doesn't see the
changes to the wired network (connect/disconnect) unless I restart dbus
(doesn't help wireless though).

Since it's a wpa2 network it's a pain to start manually.

wlassistant doesn't connect either
