I've had excellent experience with VirtualBox. My Mom had me install Debian because she was "sick and tired" of the shoddy software from the Church of Redmond. But (isn't there always a but?) she had one game for which there simply was no Linux replacement. Debian has VirtualBox "Open Source Edition" in the Sid repository, and it was (as usual) gloriously easy to install. Church of Redmond Xtremely Pathetic installed quickly and easily, and runs beautifully. It installs into a disk image, so no partitioning is required. Your stated system is vastly more than adequate. However (isn't there always an however?), the Open Source Edition doesn't do USB. VirtualBox itself is limited to a hard-coded screen of 800x600. The closed-source VirtualBox is available prepackaged from VirtualBox.org for Debian, and does access USB devices and is free to use by individuals. That's my experience. Allowing for the screen limitations, I'm very pleased with how VirtualBox works. I have not used any other virtualization products, others will have to give their input on those.
