Minor correction - kmplayer is indeed from debian testing repo here.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp$ apt-cache policy kmplayer
kmplayer:
  Installed: 1:0.10.0c-1
  Candidate: 1:0.10.0c-1
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.10.0c-1 0
        990 http://ftp.us.debian.org testing/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp$

But kmplayer is really just a kde front end to mplayer, so it
shouldn't make that much of a difference.

And I was checking with gmplayer (my bad). Still I just checked here
with kmplayer on a test mpg and I really can't tell any difference.
But kmplayer lets you change the engine and video drivers, have you
played with those settings (currently, kmplayer is set to use libxine1
& "Auto" for video driver.)

It can be set to use mplayer as the playback engine. And you'd get
mplayer from the multimedia repository - it has better flexibility,
more codecs etc.

It's only one or two more lines :).
