Go for it! I just came back from such an event - here in California there was a rather large, distributed installfest where a bunch of us got ahold of a large number of donated computers for schools and underprivileged folks and set them up with Ubuntu at the Untangle HQ in San Mateo, CA. We had at least 50 ready to go when I left (I was there most of the day) and overall it was a good push to get Ubuntu out to folks that can really use it.
