That is interesting. I skimmed the early parts of this thread, so I don't know the context, but I recently had a similar disappearance of grub. I upgraded an etch laptop from 2.6.17 to 2.6.18 and it mysteriously purged grub, removing the /boot/grub directory entirely. This was left unresolved after a discussion ("2.6.18 problems with grub and ACPI") on debian-laptop.
