What do you mean get the machine to see?

What does dmesg show?

RAID solves the problem of a dying disk and has instantaneous/continuous
backup. Drive failure can kill the MB or a dead MB can kill data on the
drive.

Backing up to a drive on a different computer is more likely to protect
the data that gets to it (both boxes would have to be destroyed to be
affected). Note that I would encrypt the data before trusting it to a
Win box. Just pipe it through OpenSSL's enc funtion on its way to the
box.

Worry about getting your second 500 GB (not Gb) drive set up first.

Doug.
