What do you mean get the machine to see? What does dmesg show? RAID solves the problem of a dying disk and has instantaneous/continuous backup. Drive failure can kill the MB or a dead MB can kill data on the drive. Backing up to a drive on a different computer is more likely to protect the data that gets to it (both boxes would have to be destroyed to be affected). Note that I would encrypt the data before trusting it to a Win box. Just pipe it through OpenSSL's enc funtion on its way to the box.
