My guess would be that there's either a setting or a "remembered" but
untweakable config that is trying to use something that isn't there.

Does lynx work?  I think that all its settings are available in the
/etc/lynx.rc and via the menus in your home directory.

What happens if you create a brand-new user and try the offending
browser as that user?

Check the browser configs for proxy settings.  You'll want "direct
connection to the internet".

Are you sure that there is no firewall on any box you control that, eg.
is redirecting ports or something strange?
