Unless I severely misjudge the situation, he's looking for a desktop. As a desktop, stable answers to the same description that the OP used to describe the kernel - out dated. Debian stable is known for that. "clueless and *totally wrong* advice" looks like a classic example of Freudian transference from my perception.
