how does this not answer your question? Ken suggests that you need to source .bashrc. That makes sense to me. The aliases defined in .bashrc are not in scope unless you source .bashrc. You probably still need to mess around with the shoptions to expand the aliases, but you certainly can't expand them if they aren't even in scope. .02 A
