I want to xforward mplayer, but when I run it from my remote ssh

Is there any way to force it to run as a GUI application so it will
appear in my local X session? I don't see this in the MPlayer docs.

Have you tried an explicit -display option? Note that you may have trouble with (a) audio on the remote machine; and (b) some of the rendering engines will probably not work right through a remote X server.
