I'm not sure why it is different, but i think I can tell you how to
change the default behaviour.

I have the following in my ~/.Xresources:

Emacs.foreground: white
Emacs.background: black

You need to restart X or do a xrdb .Xresources in a Terminal for changes
to take effect, but then you should be set.
