It might be worth trying to reconfigure xserver-xorg.
Not just for the mouse but for the frame buffering option also.
When I first installed Etch, a few days ago on a fax machine, I couldn't
get the mouse to work at all.
Changing mouse options in Xserver, and also getting rid of adapters
trying to fit a ps2 mouse to a com port, and restarting fixed it.
A number of things can effect X, including a recurring situation with
different releases, of no smooth install of fonts into a native directory.
This has screwed X install for me on a number of occasions,
necessitating rewriting directory specs, predating Xorg and after.
