Once I had the same problem with kernel: 2.6.18-4-486 After I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.18-5-686 I could use 2Gb. I was told that "There were no 486 machines with more than a GB of RAM, and those CPUs probably don't have the features needed by HIGHMEM". So obviously your 2.4.27-2-386 kernel has the same problem. But to be honest, I don't know if you can use a 686 kernel on a 386 machine. Manon.
