I also tried to enable intelfb on my laptop but didin't find a way out, perhaps because I didn't include all necessary dependant module in my initrd. I noticed that the warning: "Video mode must be programmed at boot time" goes off if you specify vga=xxx (791 in my case) in the grub command line.
