Please don't top post.
Ports are not filtered unless you have iptable rules blocking them.  If
there's no application listening on a given port, it is referred to as
closed, otherwise it is open.  Firewall software in linux is a higher
level interface to raw iptables.  There are GUIs such as Firehol and
Guarddog, and config-file driven scripts such as Shorewall.  'apt-cache
search firewall'
