Cannot Initialize DSP

My sound system was working perfectly but something must have changed 
when I ran apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade.  The system is lenny 
with kernel-image-2.6.22-2.   I ran alsaconf but still get the message, 
"Cannot initialize DSP"

I scrolled through the October archive but didn't spot a similar problem.
