Zlib

Hello I have a program that needs Zlib installed.  I checked using dpkg and found that zlib1g and zlib1g-dev was installed.  Whenever I tried to use the program I get the following:  ‘Zlib support must be enabled on your server’.  How do I enable it even though dpkg says it is installed?   When I do ‘which zlib’ I get nothing.     Thanks   Reaz
