I think it is purely a personal choice. I like to separate my personal
email, work email, email from mailing lists whose archives are available on
the net, emails from mailing lists which are not archived/archives not
available publicly. There are still more categories but those are
unnecessary here :-)

d-u falls under the category of mailing list whose archives are available on
the net. So for me there is no point in storing them on my hard drive.
Since I do not want to store them on my hard drive, I like the old emails
to be deleted periodically. This is what happens in news clients like
knode. The messages expire after some time and the clutter on my hard drive
is less.

If I ever want to look at some previous discussion, I go to google and use
site:lists.debian.org.
