Here's how I just handled a similar challenge. This is a real Rube Goldberg solution, but it worked... My wife handed me an OOo page saved as an 8.4 Mb .doc file with 8 X 1Mb embedded images sized to fit on the page with some text. She asked me to put that up on her web page, but clearly there had to be a better way to a) create such a page using scaled images, and b) upload it so it would be accessible as smaller download. After trying with little success to print or export the page to pdf (file size still too big), I took a screen shot! Bingo, success. I used imagemagick ($ import foo.jpg). New file: 125kb.
