The module "mousedev" is compiled into the kernel in the newer 2.6 debian kernel images (I wouldn't have been able to access /dev/input/mice otherwise), and as I wrote in the initial post, neither loading "psmouse" nor compiling it into the kernel has helped. It now turned out that the 2.6.21 kernel from the testing distribution had caused the problem. After installing the 2.6.18 kernel from stable on the testing box, loading psmouse would cause the PS/2 mouse to be found. Maybe this post will help other people having problems with the testing kernel, or it will help to fix the testing distribution. Mail me for questions.
