The fonts are definitely recognized by X. I want to see what your
dot-per-inch value is. Please give us the output of xdpyinfo.
Also, try this:
1) Shutdown gdm using (as root) /etc/init.d/gdm stop
2) Go into a normal user account.
3) Start Xorg using this command: startx -- -dpi 100
Tell us if things are better.
