Thank you for tracing my problem. It's true that my root system is of ext3 format. I only got the compiled image from the mirror site security.debian.org. I don't know if ext3 is compiled is built into the kernel or compiled as a module. Do I have to check that before I reboot the system? I'm sure that my cpu is hyper-thread enabled. Shall I choose the 686 version of 2.6.18 kernel in the new source tree?
