I'm needing this as well -- btw I use Gentoo.  Is it possible that you need to replace "/root" with 
"/" in some places?  It's a mistake I've made before.  /root is of course the root user's  
"home" directory, while / is the 'root' of the filesystem, which is what I think you want.  Hope
