The kernel that supported my camera was 2.6.18-4-686, but that same
kernel since last week no longer sees the camera.

You loaded the module uhci_hcd. That module I don't have loaded:

        $ lsmod | grep 'usb\|hci'
        usb_storage 71840 0
        usblp 12768 0
        scsi_mod 124168 6 usb_storage,sbp2,sd_mod,libata,
                                        aic79xx,scsi_transport_spi
        ehci_hcd 28136 0
        ohci1394 30800 0
        ieee1394 86904 3 sbp2,eth1394,ohci1394
        ohci_hcd 18276 0
        ide_core 110504 4 usb_storage,ide_cd,amd74xx,generic
        usbcore 112644 5 usb_storage,usblp,ehci_hcd,ohci_hcd

I thought the choice of ehci, ohci, uhci depended on one's MB
chipset. In any case, I loaded the uhci module and reconnected the
camera, but nothing reported in syslog, and the camera is not reported
by $ lsusb.

I'm concerned that I apparently no longer have usbdevfs mounted. Is
that a thing of the past with Etch? If it should be loaded and is not,
I'd surely experience troubles seeing USB devices.

Also, I don't have /proc/bus/usb/drivers . That used to be the mount
point for usbdevfs.
