As far as an Xterm is concerned you could create (if it does not already exist) $HOME/.Xresources and put in it a line like XTerm*font: 10x20 Either restart X or do 'xrdb -merge .Xresources' to have this take effect. I think the fonts available to use may be found in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc if you prefer something other than 10x20.
