Note: Under Etch I have the same problem.
      I can list pear packages available on <pear.php.net>, I can
      install them using "pear install <package>" (th package is
      definitivly downloaded and in the right directory) but if I
      want to use it, they are not availlable.

      Same problem for the "pecl" stuff.
