You're using version 4.1.0 of X which may not support your hardware properly. My Dell 2350 has the Intel 845GL chipset and when I installed debian I couldn't get X to work either. It turns out that the chipset is only supported by version 4.3.0 of X which can be downloaded and installed from www.xfree86.org.
