I don't know if this will help you or not, but keep in mind that the Linux kernel treats all devices like files, so you can just open a terminal and cd to the CD (pun). Usually it will be /media/cdrom which is a symlink to /media/cdrom0. In older systems it was always /mnt/cdrom, but whatever it is, it doesn't really matter. Can you ls the files on the data cd by doing: ls /media/cdrom ? It seems to me that if the drive can play audio CD's then it *should* be able to read data CD's too.
