Epecially the size of the / partition worries me
because I had the experience that in another os
(ubuntu breezer) it filled up quickly.

Yes, reinstall and specify the partition sizes yourself. It's a good
idea to have multiple kernels available for use; if you manage to
install three kernels, 259MB is going to be very tight.
Partition layouts are *very* difficult to fix after you've been using
the system for a long time and have lots of not-backed-up data, so it's
worth it to get it right the first time.
