I have had cases myself where the KDE printer scan came up empty but it nevertheless worked to select "SMB" and to put in the correct username and password (for the windows print "server"), the server and the printer name in the KDE dialogs. If what I have posted above does not get you going then you should try to run smbclient -U <user> -L <server> to see if you can "talk" to the XP machine at all.
