While M. Fioretti has basically pointed out that no matter what line is drawn, there's still clearly a problem, and so I'm tempted to not respond; it's actually easy to draw a line. There exists a gentoo-user mailing list. If a post to debian-user would be exactly as on-topic if posted to gentoo-user, then it is offtopic on *both* lists, and belongs on neither. See: Posting about religion is identically off-topic on gentoo-user as it is here, and thus belongs in neither place. Posting about buying a new motherboard is more relevant here *if* you will be putting Debian on it, and so belongs here (if you'll be putting gentoo on it, it belongs there). Posting about politics/patents is identically relevant on both, and thus belongs on neither, _unless_ the post directly relates to Debian in some way. Perhaps because it's talking about how patent issues will affect Debian or how Debian will react to/get around them. Feel free to examine the gentoo-user list archives if you're unclear on what a mailing list w/o offtopic posts looks like: http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-user/ -- see shy jo
