That is a solution. There are a lot of gnome libraries that some programs (like iceweasel) use, so getting rid of all of gnome could be risky. You could try with aptitude to remove Gnome, and it should warn you which other packages depend on ones you are trying to remove. So, you can tell aptitude to keep those. The problem comes in knowing which library does what. When in doubt, I would say, keep.
